Lapland – Kongo of Europe. 1/3 of the area of Sodankylä (12 400 sqkm) municipality in Lapland is reserved for mining activities. Same goes through out Central Lapland and numerous parts of Northern Finland. Ruka, Levi, Ylläs and Vuokatti skiing resorts are the largest leisure locations in Finland by revenue and they all have one thing in common – a mine or a plan to set up one in the near visinity.
The largest open pit mine in the World is located just a rock toss away from Vuokatti. Ylläs skiing resort, the best in Finland, is planning a major investment over 13 000 beds and at the same time a mine is being set up just 10km west from Ylläs. A similar one to largest open pit mine in the World close to Vuokatti. Levi has a large gold mine upriver the stream running through the resort.
To top this all the Vuokatti mine plans to start uranium exploitation. Ruka, the largest leisure center in Finland, is threatened by another uranium mine. Vuokatti and Kuusamo both have build their leisure locations around the image “Green” meaning clean air, untouched nature, outdoor activities and peace of mind.
Human stupidity is infinite.
