Reindeer – the desert dog

Reindeers are eating up the tundra steady and slow in the Northern Scandinavia. The modern reindeer herding methods combined with the increased number of reindeer in Samiland have left the traditional pastures with eroding landscape. The past natural migration routes from the taiga forests and mountain plateaus to the coast of the Arctic Ocean have been fenced into herding units (paliskunta). The increased efficiency and large reindeer herds pose a threat to the delicate arctic nature.
